The Unemptied Nest
We have all heard about going into “that stage” of life and we all kind of know that the day comes when the kids fly the coup, and all that’s left are the adults in the house. The path along this emotional journey takes parents to many places, but all roads end up with them coming to terms with this stage in life. Some choose to downsize, while others realize they have a home they love but it needs to be redesigned to their needs now.
For those interested in downsizing, maybe we’ll have a different post in the future. For now, though, here are some rules to live by and ways to find the intersection between style and lifestyle.
Personalized spaces are important. There is a concept called “genius loci,” which refers to the spirit of a place” and a lot of the place making in this case is done by the occupants of the home. Now that some of the occupants have left, there is a lingering feeling of the space no longer having the same energy or “spirit.” Adding meaningful touches of colour and personality and updating a space to better reflect its current occupants creates a connection.

Comfort and function are key. Whether it means acquiescing to your partner’s request for a recliner or having height-appropriate sofa seats for both of you.
