We have all heard about going into “that stage” of life and we all kind of know that the day comes when the kids fly the coup, and all that’s left are the adults in the house. The path along this emotional journey takes parents to many places, but all roads end up with them coming to terms with this stage in life. Some choose to downsize, while others realize they have a home they love but it needs to be redesigned to their needs now.
For those interested in downsizing, maybe we’ll have a different post in the future. For now, though, here are some rules to live by and ways to find the intersection between style and lifestyle.
Personalized spaces are important. There is a concept called “genius loci,” which refers to the spirit of a place” and a lot of the place making in this case is done by the occupants of the home. Now that some of the occupants have left, there is a lingering feeling of the space no longer having the same energy or “spirit.” Adding meaningful touches of colour and personality and updating a space to better reflect its current occupants creates a connection.
Comfort and function are key. Whether it means acquiescing to your partner’s request for a recliner or having height-appropriate sofa seats for both of you. When purchasing new furniture, it is essential to sit-test furniture while you’re there so you can attest to their comfort. Here is our Godet Sofa with adjustable headrests, lumbar support and power recline. Is the power recline clockable?
Consider what your lifestyle will be, and do not jump the gun. Rather than redoing a room for the sake of it, this is the chance to be intentional in how you want to use this space. This becomes a golden opportunity to have a crafts room or a yoga studio to explore new hobbies, a home theatre, a speakeasy, or a games room for you and your partner to enjoy. And now that it will be mostly you and your spouse spending the most days at home, why not turn this space into something that brings you joy?
We, the team at Revolve Furnishings, hope these tips are helpful to those who are beginning to design for this new phase of life. And for one last decorating tip for this article: Do what you love with love! At the end of it all, it is your house, and it should be a true reflection of the people who live there.
