Contemporary design has been defined and redefined for many years now, and sometimes staying on top of the trends can be a little tricky to navigate. The few things that have maintained consistency in contemporary design are clean lines, simplicity, neutral shades, and thoughtful accents.
Keeping this in mind, we are going to help you re-decorate and transform your bedroom into a contemporary oasis in 4 simple steps.
The first rule of thumb when it comes to contemporary design is to not over complicate, clutter, or curate the look of your design. Start your process with a list - what do you need? A bed, storage, a nightstand, lighting etc. Lay it all out so your brain can see it on paper and start with the logistics.
How much storage will you need? Do you have natural lighting or will you have to supplement with lamps? We like to start here because as we all know, decorating is the fun part but if you don’t start with good bones, you can begin putting yourself in the situation where you are buying and returning and waiting and overcomplicating everything.
Through this process, remind yourself that when it comes to accomplishing a contemporary look, less is almost always more. The size of your furniture should be appropriate for your space and offer the clean, fresh, and orderly look you are looking for.
Okay, okay, we know you might love the royal blue chest and we aren’t going to be the ones to tell you to not go with what you love. But, when it comes to contemporary design, one of the most effective ways to encourage your design to last over multiple decades and design trends is to opt for pieces that are relatively neutral.
If you want a light and airy look, seek out pieces that are made of light to mid-tone wood, or white or grey materials. Contrarily, if you want something a little bolder, seek out dark wood or black furniture options. Another industry trick is to look for dressers and chests with no knobs or changeable knobs. If your piece is solid, you can change up the look every couple of years by swapping out the knobs for whatever is “on-trend” at the time.
Lighting can be your best friend in the bedroom. Having multiple lighting options that complement each other and your design will bring a fresh, effortless effect to your room that is as easy as flipping a switch. Seek out timeless lighting bases and then feel free to go with the lampshades that are trendy and fun.
One thing that we tell clients over and over again is that when it comes to designing or redesigning your home, that it is integral to be who you are. We can all get caught up in the glamour of what is trending at the moment but what will actually fill your soul and make your house a home is furniture and decor pieces that you love.
